Red Lion Camping and Caravan Park
Visited 6th to 8th Aug 2004. I believe this site has changed hands since last year so perhaps it has simply gone downhill since then because reviews I've seen dating from last year were mostly very complimentary.
The camp site is extremely large and is in absolutely beautiful surroundings by a river. All the green parts of it are kept pretty neat, clean and tidy. However, the front end facilities, site management and the Red Lion Pub leave a great deal to be desired.
There is one Shower and Toilet block. This contains 6 shower cubicles and six toilet cubicles for the men and similar for the women (to cater for, potentially, hundreds of campers). The area around these blocks had an almost permanent unpleasant smell. When we were there 2 of the men's and 3 of the women's shower cubicles were out of action. On the second morning when my wife went for her shower all the women's showers were providing only a slight trickle of water, making it impossible to have a shower at all. The showers and toilets were "cleaned" once each day but, in spite of this, they were still not what I would call properly clean.
The shop on the site didn't open until 9 o'clock and did not cater for some of the most basic things which you could expect such a place to stock, especially baring in mind that it was on a campsite.
The thing which most attracted us to visit this site was that it had the Red Lion Pub on site. We found that the only good thing about the pub was its appearance from the outside (it was very picturesque). The guy in charge was very unfriendly and his attitude seemed to be followed by his staff. On the Saturday they wanted to close their door at 2.15 and serve drinks only "from the window". To quote the boss man when people were still coming in at 2.30, he shouted loudly at one his waitresses (remember, these were his customers he was referring to) "we're trying to keep them out and you keep leaving the door open". When we got our drinks (which were not cheap) they were in plastic glasses. It appeared that, if you were local or regular visitors, you got proper glasses for your money. We were going to have a snack lunch but they had already stopped taking orders so I am unable to comment on the standard of their food. However, those people who we saw eating appeared to be enjoying the food. This pub is supposed to part of a campsite set up. What a way to treat your paying customers.
Needless to say we will not be visiting the site again.
