Ardgartan Campsite
Decided on this campsite to try out our new tent - our first time camping. We arrived intending to stay for a couple of nights but were advised by the warden that they didn't give refunds and we'd be better off paying for the one night and seeing how we got on - the night before people were leaving because of the midges. The prices seemed reasonable to us, £13.90 per night for two adults and three children arriving in one car and staying in a single pitch. The showers were free, as was the dishwashing facilities, complete with hot water. They also had a laundry room, which although we didn't use it, seemed reasonably priced as well. The site is operated by the Forest Holidays, a part of the Forestry Commission.
Although it's the only place we've visited it was - in our opinion - clean, well situated on the banks of Loch Long, had a couple of toilet/shower blocks (the smaller ones were closed in the evening) a well stocked shop (open 8-6 seven days a week), free boat launching onto the loch and friendly, helpful wardens.
We lived just over an hour away from this campsite so going home if it wasn't up to much was always an option. We didn't, despite the midges being a nuisance (We used Avon Skin So Soft Woodland Fresh spray which, although not sold as such, is a very good midge repellant).
